The 2020 COVID-19 kindness story
On March 13, 2020, Lucas met an elderly man named Peter at a CVS pharmacy in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Peter was using a walker and trying to find toilet paper for himself and his wife, Alice, who was sick and waiting in their vehicle with oxygen equipment. Lucas searched four stores, located supplies, and delivered them to the couple. He later helped with groceries and wrote about the experience on Facebook.
The Facebook post circulated widely. Lucas established a Green Bay post office box to collect donations on the couple's behalf. Between 2020 and 2024, he received and coordinated more than 5,000 individual donations, including household essentials and monetary contributions. He visited the couple approximately 15 to 20 times over the ensuing years, and they became his friends.
Peter died in 2023 at age 86. Lucas attended his funeral, organized a GoFundMe to assist Alice after his death, and contributed $10,000 to Peter's memorial fund. Alice died in 2024 at age 87. Lucas attended her funeral and contributed $10,000 to her memorial fund. His personal memorial contributions totaled $20,000, separate from the community donations he coordinated.
Lucas has written two first-person essays about the encounter, the friendship that followed, and the lasting impact of the public response.

The 2023 mortgage comparison
In October 2023, Lucas shared TikTok videos comparing his parents' $287 monthly mortgage payment with his own payment, approximately 27 times higher, despite his parents' Southern California property being worth substantially more than his. The discussion focused on different property-financing histories and the costs of entering the housing market at different times.
His parents' property had been acquired under earlier market conditions and later rebuilt after a fire with help from insurance proceeds. Lucas also discussed illustrative financing costs for a high-priced Southern California property. The example should not be mistaken for a verified disclosure of his exact loan terms.
